AI is only one piece of the puzzle: what we learned at LMA San Diego

Aptum was on the ground at the Legal Marketing Association’s annual conference in San Diego, the biggest event of its kind in the world. Thousands of legal marketers and business development leaders, all in one place, comparing notes on where the profession is heading.

We spoke with legal marketing experts from across the globe. A handful of themes came up again and again. Here is what stood out.

AI is a tool, not the whole story

The noise around AI is hard to miss right now. But the experts we heard from were clear. AI is one piece of the puzzle, not the puzzle itself.

In business development you cannot be drawn in by the shiny object. It comes down to tactics and execution inside a wider plan. AI earns its place in that plan. It does not replace it.

For small teams the question is practical. How do you use AI to get more done without losing focus on the work that actually moves the needle. Used well, it is becoming a genuinely reliable tool. Used as a silver bullet, it is a distraction.

Data beats gut feeling

A strong theme throughout the conference was the value of being a data-driven firm.

The days of trusting gut feel are fading. Firms no longer want to throw money at traditional advertising and hope it works. They want to track it. They want the numbers behind the decision before they commit to it.

But the numbers are only half the job. The real skill is reading the story the data is telling you, then acting on it. Have the figures that back your ideas, and you stop guessing.

Back younger lawyers in BD earlier

There is a clear shift toward giving younger lawyers business development support sooner.

For a long time, BD was something people avoided out of fear or uncertainty. That is changing. If a junior lawyer is curious about business development, the firm’s job is to support that curiosity, not let it stall.

More and more firms are embracing this, and it is a welcome move. Confidence in BD is built early, not left until someone is a partner.

Relationships over optics

Business development still comes back to people.

That means creating real connections with clients. Gathering feedback wherever you can. Building relationships between lawyers, clients and referral partners in ways that mean something. Not relationships for show.

Everyone builds and nurtures relationships differently, and firms are now bringing that thinking into their training. The goal is to help people find an approach that is honest and right for them, rather than forcing a single playbook on everyone.

You can do anything, but not everything

Maybe the simplest takeaway, and the one worth pinning to the wall.

You can do anything. You cannot do everything. The firms getting it right are specific about what they choose to focus on, then they commit to it. Focus is the strategy.

The thread that ties it together

Legal marketing and business development are maturing. AI is exciting, data is essential, but relationships and focus still win the day.

That is the conversation we came to San Diego to be part of, and it is the thinking we bring back to the firms we work with.
